Mr. Cates has been actively engaged in plaintiff and defense litigation for more than twenty-five years, since his admission to the Louisiana Bar Association in 1976. He has earned national recognition for his success as a trial and appellate advocate, particularly in products liability and statutory employment litigation.

An honors graduate of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Mr. Cates was a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist and the recipient of a NSFNS scholarship, which was applied towards furthering his formal education at Loyola University in New Orleans.

At Loyola, Mr. Cates was selected to participate in the Honors and Privileged Studies Program and ultimately was named as a University Fellow. He received the Dean’s Award three consecutive years for maintaining the highest scholastic average in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a result of academic achievement, he was selected for membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society, and Delta Epsilon Sigma.

Ranked first in Loyola University’s College of Arts and Sciences at the time of his acceptance into Loyola’s School of Law, Mr. Cates received his undergraduate degree cum laude after completing his freshman year in law school and ultimately received his Juris Doctor, again with honors, in May of 1976.

As an attorney, Mr. Cates has extensive trial experience as both plaintiff and defense counsel. He was one of the original trial attorneys in the Litigation Division of the City Attorney’s Office in New Orleans. His trial experience as both plaintiff and defense counsel includes personal injury and vehicular litigation, zoning and real estate contests, as well as civil rights actions and employment discrimination cases. He has represented the City of New Orleans before administrative and legislative bodies such as the New Orleans Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and the New Orleans City Council. He has been a member of the City’s Legislative Delegation, drafting and lobbying for the passage of much needed legislation at the State Legislature. His experience on behalf of plaintiffs and defendants includes products and premises liability, wrongful death, mass tort and maritime claims. He has successfully represented clients before virtually every type of authority including state and federal courts, local, state and national legislative bodies in administrative proceedings and arbitrations.

Committed to professional as well as community service, Mr. Cates has served as a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Minority Involvement Committee, as a member of the Louisiana Trial Lawyer’s Association Board of Governor for three years, as well as the President’s Council of that organization. He is also a member of the New Orleans Bar Association and the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society. He served as the President of the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation, and is Chairman of the Civil Service Commission of New Orleans. Currently, Mr. Cates serves on the Law Visiting Committee at Loyola University in New Orleans.

Mr. Cates is married to Dr. Angela Crisp Cates, a local ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery. He has two children, Sidney V, a homicide detective with the New Orleans Police Department, and Lauren, an honors graduate of Oglethorpe University, entering Villanova University Law School this fall.

Mr. Cates’ father is a retired Deputy Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department since 1972, and his mother retired from the Orleans Parish School Board in 1988.
