Mr. Cates is married to Dr. Angela Crisp Cates, a local ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery.  He has two children, Sidney V. a homicide detective with the New Orleans Police Department, and Lauren Ann, an honors graduate of Oglethorpe University, entering Villanova University Law School this fall.

Mr. Cates father is a former NOPD Deputy Superintendent and his mother is a retired secretary in public schools of Orleans Parish.
